Deke Weaver Honored with an ACE Award
On October 27 Deke Weaver of the School of Art and Design officially accepted his ACE Award from 40 North | 88 West "for creating larger than life productions with local collaborators and open access for audiences while also being dedicated to showing that the arts can not only transform lives but also our relationship to the world around us." Most recently, Weaver has been focusing on The Unreliable Bestiary, a collection of stories about the intersections between humans, animals, and the environment. In MONKEY, ELEPHANT, WOLF, and the current production BEAR, he has woven live theatre, film, myths, dance, music, and other media together within a setting such as a stock pavilion or the woods to show the creature's life in greater context. He aims to craft a full-length performance corresponding to each letter of the alphabet and accompany those with books and films to complete an interconnected resource on our vanishing species and ever-changing planet. Weaver has also shown his work at venues including the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles and the Sundance Film Festival. The ACE Awards recognize achievement in the arts across Champaign County and are judged by a community panel.
