Jazz Musicians Connect in High-Speed Collaboration

School of Music alumnus Phillip Doyle, now the director of jazz studies at Eastern Washington University in Cheney, took the stage—virtually—with current School of Music faculty members Chip McNeill and Jim Pugh during the 2013 Jazz Dialogue Festival. As part of the M.A.N.O.M.E. project—the Metropolitan Area Network Optimized Virtual Environment—McNeill on tenor sax and Pugh on trombone performed from Smith Hall on campus and appeared onscreen in Spokane, where Doyle led a small combo on tenor sax. A high-speed network allowed for real-time interaction.
