Honorable Mentions!
Carnaval! is a dynamic performance at the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts that brings to life the global traditions of Carnival—festivals with deep roots in pre-Lenten Christian observances and centuries-old cultural expressions of joy, community, and renewal. Celebrated in diverse ways across the world, from Brazil’s samba-filled parades to France’s masked balls and Cuba’s vibrant comparsas, Carnival blends music, dance, and spectacle into a spirited display of creativity and tradition. Taking place on March 4, 2025, and organized by Lyric Theatre at Illinois through the School of Music, Carnaval! showcases these rich musical and dance influences, culminating in a lively tribute to the energy and exuberance of Mardi Gras.

Outfit
Stepping into the Krannert Center lobby, I am immediately greeted by a mesmerising display of artistry. A hoop dancer, dressed in a flowing black dress with a delicate black ribbon in her hair, twirls bright orange hoops with effortless grace. A juggler in a sharp black suit captivates the crowd, his yellow flower-adorned pants providing a striking contrast to the blue-painted balls he expertly tosses in the air. A performer in zebra-striped pants moves with hypnotic fluidity, manipulating large white fans in a display of elegance and control. The sheer skill and poise of these artists are breathtaking—a testament to the precision and creativity embedded in flow arts.
As the artists perform, the pulse of live music fills the air. Drawn by the infectious sound, I follow it to discover Bloco Gavião, a local Brazilian percussion ensemble. While some members beat vibrant rhythms on their drums, children from the group dance joyfully in a circle, their movements echoing the energy of the music.

Venturing
Venturing deeper into the crowd, I witness an unexpected yet delightful sight: tables filled with people of all ages—children, students, and older adults—bonding over an old-fashioned game of chance. If anything can bring generations together, it’s a friendly gamble! For the younger ones, a face painting stall offers a burst of whimsy. Children run through the venue, their faces transformed into pink butterflies adorned with gold rhinestones or cunning little foxes with black-tipped noses. And just as the kids fill the space with vibrant designs, the adults bring their own splash of color through their extravagant outfits. Ornate masks adorned with feathers and glitter, classic purple, green, and gold beaded necklaces, towering jester hats, and regal crowns—each ensemble more dazzling than the last. If you plan on attending Carnaval!, put on your best costumes, because you will be outshone!

Performance section
Anticipation builds, the doors open, and the audience rushes to their seats. The show begins with a powerful anthem that embodies the spirit of Mardi Gras— “La Vida Es Un Carnaval” by Víctor Daniel, famously performed by Celia Cruz. The Lyric Theatre cohort, clad in rich earthy tones, brings the salsa rhythms to life. Then, as the performance transitions, the audience gasps in delight—an elegant costume change reveals performers in voluminous gowns and tailored suits, embodying the romance of French chanson.
A standout moment arrives when Catheryn Kuhar, a senior pursuing a BMA in Lyric Theatre, takes center stage to perform “Voilà” by Barbara Pravi. With masterful French and deeply expressive delivery, she holds the audience captive. The stage, bathed in moody blue and silver light, heightens the emotional weight of her performance, bringing (and I do not exaggerate) tears to my eyes. The journey through music continues, from the soulful sounds of Cuba to the tender lyricism of France to the vibrant rhythms of Brazilian music pulsing with life—playful, percussive, and impossible not to move to.

More
In the spirit of a grande finale, “Carnaval del Barrio” by Lin-Manuel Miranda bursts forth as the entire company returns to the stage, igniting a wave of energy. The audience, unable to resist the infectious rhythms, rises to their feet, clapping, dancing, and celebrating Latin identity, resilience, and unity. Strangers become dance partners, voices join in unison, and for a moment, the Krannert Center transforms into a grand street festival.
Standing there, swept up in the music and movement, a thought crosses my mind: this is the power of music. To be moved to tears by the sheer depth of a voice, to dance with people I have never met, to feel the heartbeat of cultures I have yet to experience. Organized and presented by Lyric Theatre at Illinois and the Krannert Center, Carnaval! proves that music and theatre transcend the boundaries of age, culture, and language; uniting us in celebration and joy.
