Pianist Charlotte Patchin was the first music instructor—and the first female instructor of any subject—hired at the University of Illinois. A graduate of Oberlin College and the New York Conservatory of Music, Patchin joined the faculty at Illinois in 1872 and remained here for seven years. Patchin, who is credited as the founder of the School of Music, was also a talented artist in oil, watercolors, and china painting. She taught freehand drawing in addition to music. After leaving Illinois, she worked at Brownwood College in Music at Glen Rose College in Music and Art.
