Illinois Architecture's Kathryn Anthony, who has published Designing for Diversity: Gender, Race, and Ethnicity in the Architectural Profession and has testified before Congress about health and safety issues, added her voice and a design perspective to the recent national conversation about discrimination and access to public bathrooms for transgender people. In an interview with the News Bureau, she discussed civil rights struggles for equal access that date to 1964, the ways that well-designed facilities can improve safety, and the benefits to society from installing more gender-neutral, private, and accessible bathrooms. Read more of Anthony's thoughts about these issues in the News Bureau article. Anthony's guidance on the topic of gender-neutral bathrooms was also welcomed and quoted by John D. Sutter in a CNN Opinion column.
