FAA Faculty Selected for Chancellor's Call to Action Funding

Recognizing the critical need for universities across our nation to prioritize research focused on systemic racial inequities and injustices that exist not only in our communities but in higher education itself, the Chancellor’s Call to Action Research Program provides support for academic research and the expansion of community-based knowledge that advances the understanding of systemic racism and generationally embedded racial disparity. For 2024, the research program will focus on areas that span domestic, international, and transnational spaces.

Landscape Architecture Assistant Professor Kelley Lemon and Urban Planning faculty Faranak Miraftab, Magdalena Novoa, and Ken Salo were recipients of the Chancellor Call to Action Research Project funding. Chancellor’s Call to Action Research Program is a response to address critical needs facing society as we prioritize research focused on systemic bias. Both FAA projects exemplify publicly engaged research that raises awareness about and develops new tools for restorative and regenerative systems in communities. One is focused in Illinois (East St. Louis), the other trans-continental; one is practical/material to advance systemic, healthy urban agriculture for a Black community in Illinois and one employs digital technologies to profile and connect a wide range of ‘humane urbanism’ practices across multiple community contexts.
