what are art education students from the U of I working on?
Graduate student Simmi Wallace is bringing a unique mix of motion-based art classes to the Champaign-Urbana community this spring. Designed for artists of all experience levels, the classes will introduce students to drawing animation, flipbooks, claymation and puppetry in a welcoming, hands-on environment. Wallace said the mediums are connected through movement and creativity, describing them as “off the beaten path and really fun.”
Wallace’s teaching experience began at just 14 years old at the Memorial Art Gallery in Rochester, New York, where he taught drawing, puppetry and other art forms to students of all ages. Former colleagues and students praised his ability to create supportive, individualized learning experiences that help beginners feel confident exploring new creative skills.
Beyond teaching art techniques, Wallace hopes the classes encourage creativity, experimentation and personal growth. He views art as a tool for building life skills and fostering self-expression.
