As my four months studying abroad in Florence come to an end, I find myself reflecting on an experience that has been as enriching academically as it has been personally. My time at Lorenzo de’ Medici Institute (LdM) has been filled with discovery of new subjects, new passions, and a deeper connection to the culture around me. What began as a decision to study abroad quickly turned into a transformative journey I will not forget.
The courses offered at LdM are incredibly diverse, and my classmates and I had the chance to explore subjects that felt both unique and immersive. One of the most compelling was my Art Crime course, which dives into the fascinating and often shocking world of art crime, from museum thefts to wartime looting and forgery scandals. I was especially drawn to the complex intersection of law, politics, ethics, and criminology, and how these forces shape real debates around cultural heritage and restitution. Through case studies, hands-on projects, and insights from professionals, the course offered a deeper understanding of how we protect and sometimes contest our shared artistic legacy.
SEC 2
Another highlight of my semester was Ceramics and Well Being. This course was an incredibly therapeutic and freeing experience, allowing me to explore ceramics as a form of creative expression and self care. With a strong emphasis on mindfulness and the connection between body and material, working with clay became both grounding and restorative. My professor gave us a great deal of creative freedom, encouraging experimentation while guiding us through techniques like hand building, wheel throwing, and glazing. What started as a new skill quickly became a deeply personal and calming artistic outlet.
I also took Italian Elementary, which gave me a strong and practical foundation in the language. The course focused on real life communication, helping me feel more confident navigating everyday situations. What made it especially enjoyable was my professor’s approach, through fun, interactive activities and constant conversation practice, learning felt natural and engaging. It was also incredibly rewarding to grow alongside other students, supporting one another as we improved together. Combined with cultural immersion, the experience brought the language to life in a meaningful way.
SEC 3
Beyond the classroom, LdM offers a wide range of weekly activities that truly enhance student life. Whether you are a foodie interested in gelato tastings, pasta making, and traditional Italian breakfasts, or someone eager to explore the city through guided visits to gardens, museums, and palazzos, there is always something to do. For those looking to socialize, there are relaxed gatherings like tea and biscuits or slow drinking events, while more creative students can participate in open mic nights and final exhibitions. The best part is that these activities are all free, making it easy to connect with others and experience Florence more fully.
LdM also organizes field trips that allow students to explore beyond the city. From destinations like Pompeii, Capri, and Bologna, these one to two day trips are thoughtfully planned, with transportation, accommodation, and guided activities included. They made traveling around Italy both accessible and stress free.
SEC 4
Overall, the FAA study abroad opportunity at LdM delivers an authentic and well-rounded study abroad experience. From engaging and thought provoking courses to a vibrant calendar of activities and opportunities to travel, every aspect is designed to help students grow academically, culturally, and personally. As I leave Florence, I do so with new knowledge, unforgettable memories and a deeper appreciation for the world beyond my own.
